Echoes of an Age Past Chapter 7
A hand grabbed at the stunted bush growing by the edge of the ravine and tugged experimentally. Satisfied the hardy plant wasn't going to give way, the hand pulled and another arm emerged, its wrist wrapped in a tough leather bracer, laying along the broken edge of the road. It was followed by a head, its hair wrapped in a black bandana and sweating with effort. "Ooof... We're good! The coast's clear!" Simon called back to those below him.
"Well would you kindly hurry it up just a little?" complained Lucas, "This isn't exactly comfy here!"
"Just keep your eyes down, you perverted little monkey!" sna

"So remind me," complained Lucas, "Whose bright idea it was to take the right-hand path? Didn't I tell you, if we took the left, we could have followed the river all the way through the mountains! Sure it winds more, but at least it's not so steep and better yet, not still broken by the shakings, because pretty much no-one's come this way in FOUR HUNDRED YEARS!"
"Like I told you," countered Simon, sneering at the exhausted rogue, "Those maps you read don't show the rapids, or the hidden sinkholes in the riverbed, or the avalanche risks along that path! I know this area and that river would have been

Sunlight broke through the low clouds overhead, shining down on the valley below in dazzling shafts. The six travellers paused on their path, next to a broken cliff down which a small river splashed in a waterfall. Behind them, their path lead back under the shadow of the trees, into the steep hills and further west. Ahead down the valley, the silver ribbon of the river shone in the fresh sun before it disappeared out of sight in the forest they'd emerged from at dusk the previous day.
"Amazing," murmured William, stepping forward to the edge of the cliff and kneeling down in the periphery of one of

"Lucas..? You're a half-elf; can you tell us anything about the old elven kingdoms?"
The rogue puffed himself up slightly at Nicky's question, glad of the attention.
"Interesting question," he said, rubbing his chin slightly, "Let me see; where to begin? Well the thing you have to understand about the elves is that they are not human. This is something a lot of people don't grasp. Not only that, the days of the ancient kingdoms were long ago, so a lot of what we knew has been lost to the mists of time."
"Okay I can understand that," nodded Nicky, "But what d

Mark stabbed his sword a little way into the iron-hard dirt and wiped his forehead. The battle had been brief, and he hadn't been wearing full armour, but the storytellers always seemed to forget that vigorous fighting, even for a few minutes, worked up a powerful sweat. His cloak was pushed back, over his shoulders and he only wore his padded gambeson as armour, but he was infinitely glad for the cool air. He looked around, still slightly shocked they'd come through as easily as they had. William was tending to a jagged tear in Lucas's arm, the monk's palm glowing s

The dark-haired young man gaped across the table at the girl in front of him, "You're kidding me! You're leaving already?"
Sophia shot a stinging look back at the man, who was wearing a face like a kicked puppy, "Oh come on, Jack, you knew we weren't staying long. We just stopped by to grab some supplies anyway."
"Even so, 'not long' is quite a bit different from 'just four days'! I haven't seen you in over a year, Sophia and now I barely have time to say hello to you and Nicky, before you go chasing off into the wilderness again!"
Sophia rolled her eyes, "We'll be back once we're done. The guys we're goin

"Watch where you're going, pal!"
The offending man flashed a disarming smile at the angry tavern-goer he'd collided with in the door, "Sorry, wasn't looking where I was going. Won't happen again."
The man, a labourer by his build, grunted, seemingly satisfied, walking on and not giving the black-haired young mercenary in grey clothes and a leather chestplate a second thought. The smiling man's violet eyes sparkled as he felt the weight of the coin purse he had cut from the brute's belt, as payment for ramming him. "What a jerk," he muttered, "Not even worth the risk, for a fe

The world is no longer safe. Where once ancient forests were places of majesty and wonder, bowing respectfully, a goodly distance from the paved and patrolled roads, now they loom over dirt tracks, dark and dangerous, filled with aggressive and destructive beasts. Where once the alliance of men and elves built walled cities of stone and kept the dark things that hate peace and civilization cowering in their holes, humanity now cowers behind wooden palisades and in a few fortified castles, afraid to venture out into the wilds now stalked by their nightmares made flesh. In these d

For Dorn and Duty Chapter 8
Mathias' chainsword shrieked as it cut down yet another of the cultists, blood and gore spraying from its eviscerated chest cavity. The bolter and the chainsword, the iconic weapons of the Adeptus Astartes, were designed, long back in the dark age of technology, as weapons of terror, causing such horrific wounds that any sane enemy would flinch and flee. But the mutants and heretics that assailed him now were no sane enemy. It was a full day and night since the battle began, during which, the waves of the enemy had not ceased. The Iron Warrior's bombardment had long since reduced the city's proud perime
